Some videos are downloaded completely before playback starts (firefox)

As the title says some videos are downloaded completely before playback start, with others playback starts pretty much immediately but will experience a bit of loading time if you jump to a position further from the start.

I have not found a common denominator for the different behaviors as both types use the same video and audio codecs (h264 and aac respectively)

In Chrome video playback starts immediately. This problem is limited to firefox.

What would be the next steps to diagnose the behavior and how to I ensure that all video playback starts before downloading the whole video?

It depend on your Browser supported Codec. You can use website like this.

Try to open the video directly in the browser and see if you can play it (drag and drop)

Bugzilla (playback wants to buffer the whole file if mkv)

It’s a Firefox problem with MKV files. Mozilla needs to fix it.

Thanks. The workaround seems to be to switch playback from direct stream to mkv.
