Hi I have multiple simple questions as I haven’t used stash in a while + trying to remember everything:
On the scenes page on the left side tab what are these things?
Save filters
tags
markers
organized
For groups is there a way to set an image for the group instead of it just being the movie reel image? Can you auto generate one from the scenes in the groups?
Can you have the subgroup of a group be just that, a subgroup. I dont want to have subgroups be listed under the main group page I want them to instead only be listed under the group that they are a subgroup of.
Here are AI generated answers to get the ball rolling; happy to take any needed corrections:
1. Scenes Page Left Side Tab Options
The left side tab on the Scenes page contains:
Saved Filters - Custom filter combinations you’ve saved for quick access. You can save complex filter setups (e.g., scenes with specific tag combinations like “MILF + Teen”) and recall them instantly [1].
Tags - Standard tags assigned to scenes (e.g., “MILF”, “Lesbian”, etc.). These are the regular metadata tags you apply to scenes [1:1].
Markers - Scene markers/chapters that mark specific points within a video (like scene changes or highlights) [2].
Organized - A status indicator showing whether a scene has been marked as “organized.” This is useful to track which scenes have been fully processed/finished organizing [3][4]. [ed note:] this is a flag that you set based on your own criteria of “being finished organizing/categorizing this item” so that you know it is complete and you don’t need to revisit it in the future.
2. Group Images
Custom images: Yes, you can set a custom image for a group. According to recent discussions, Stash supports front/back images that can be set manually [5].
Auto-generation: This is currently a requested feature. A recent GitHub issue (March 2026) specifically requests that the default image of Groups should auto-generate a split image of the video thumbnails/covers inside the group [6]. Currently, there is no built-in way to auto-generate a group image from scenes within the group—you would need to set it manually.
3. Subgroup Display
This is a current limitation. Based on user feedback in the Stash forum, subgroups currently appear on the main Groups page alongside parent groups, which is not what everyone expects [7]. There’s no built-in option to make subgroups only appear under their parent group page and hide them from the main Groups page. This would be a feature request for the Stash development team.
4. Group Creation from Folders
Short answer: No, groups cannot be automatically created from folder structure like galleries can.
Here’s the breakdown:
Galleries vs. Groups
Galleries: You can automatically create galleries from folders. In Settings → Library, there’s an option called “Create galleries from folders containing images”[8]. When enabled, Stash will scan your folders and automatically create galleries named after the folder names.
Groups: There is no equivalent automatic creation for groups. Groups must be created manually, and you then add scenes to them individually or through bulk operations.
What You Can Do
If you want to organize scenes into groups based on existing folder structure, you would need to:
Create groups manually - Create a new group for each folder
Add scenes - Use the “Add to group” feature to add scenes from your folder to the corresponding group
There is no built-in automation for this workflow currently. If this is something you need frequently, it would be a feature request for the Stash development team.
