Cleaning up orphaned images. How do image files and hashes used to load them correlate?

For a stash-box instance, how do the image files and the hashes used to reference them in the Stash-Box correlate.

To view an image in stash-box you get one hash, but the corresponding file stored in data/images has a different file name.

Can someone confirm that deleting the scene or the performer does not actually delete the image files associated with that scene or performer. In the past, I believe I determined this was the case. So is there any function that can be used with stash-box to clean up images left behind from deleted scenes and performers?

Scenario: A duplicate perforrmer was submitted and approved. The duplicate performer was deleted but the images associated with the performer still remain in the data/images directory.

Thanks

There are services that destroy unsued images. Not sure how often they run though.
